CCTV Digital Video Recorders
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) Digital Video Recorders have gained increasing prominence in crime-fighting applications, due to their ability to efficiently record large amounts of data in a digital format.
The United Kingdom has established a vast network of CCTV systems (numbering more than 4 million according to 2002 estimates by UrbanEye) around the country for preventing crime and ensuring swift reaction to potential flash points. Digital Video Recorder technology has greatly expanded the usefulness of these devices for surveillance.
Originally recordings were stored on analogue tape, this limited the amount of storage capability and also the life of the stored analogue recordings. Digital Video Recorders transformed the information to a digital format vastly reducing the storage space and greatly increasing the longevity of stored material.
Digital Video Recorders also have a host of addtional features unavailable to a video recorder. As the infromation is digital, every fame can be analysed allowing far more interaction for example alarms can be triggered on movement which can be signaled remotely via telephone lines or mobile networks.
